Bespoke suits in London: where to commission and what to expect
A London bespoke suit is one of the most considered purchases a man can make. It begins with a pattern cut for your body alone, passes through several fittings, and results in a garment that improves with every wearing. The Index brings London's finest makers together so you can compare and choose with confidence.
The British silhouette
The classic London cut is structured at the shoulder, suppressed at the waist, and clean through the chest. It is a confident silhouette, built to last decades and to read as formal without being stiff. Many London houses have softened this shape in recent years under Italian influence, but the underlying precision remains distinctly British.
Cloth from the English mills
London tailors draw from the finest English and Scottish mills: Holland & Sherry, Scabal, Dormeuil, and the woollen houses of the West Country and Yorkshire. A good cutter will guide you through the cloth book based on your lifestyle, climate, and how often you intend to wear the suit. Do not rush this stage.
Lead time and the fitting process
Most London bespoke houses work on a six to twelve week lead time across three or four fittings. Rush orders are possible at some houses for a premium, but the fitting process cannot be meaningfully compressed. If you have a specific occasion, book your first appointment at least four months in advance.
