A history of Sydney tailoring
Sydney's tailoring is younger and less storied than Europe's, but it has its own arc: British colonial beginnings, an injection of European craft after the war, and a confident modern revival. This is how the city arrived at the contemporary scene it has today.

Colonial beginnings
Australian tailoring began as an extension of the British tradition. As a colony, Sydney looked to London for its standards of dress, and the structured English suit set the template for formal clothing through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
For decades the city's tailoring followed British lines closely. The English silhouette, the emphasis on a clean structured cut, and the conventions of business and formal dress all crossed from London to the colony with little change.
The post-war European influence
After the Second World War, large numbers of European immigrants, many from Italy and Greece, settled in Australian cities. Among them were skilled tailors who brought continental technique and a different sense of cut to Sydney's workshops.
This influx broadened the city's tailoring beyond its British base. The softer, more expressive traditions of southern Europe began to mix with the established English style, laying the groundwork for a more varied scene.
The modern revival
In recent decades Sydney has seen a genuine revival of interest in tailoring, led by a younger generation of makers. Drawing on lighter, softer continental styles suited to the Australian climate, they have built a contemporary scene with a confident identity of its own.
Today the ateliers of Surry Hills, Paddington, and the CBD range from established houses to newer makers redefining Australian menswear. Sydney's tailoring is less about inherited tradition than about a modern, relaxed elegance shaped by its setting.
